Topolyzer

What is the Topolyzer?

Topolyzer is a device used to measure corneal topography (that is, the shape of cornea, the transparent frontal part of the eye). Cornea is very important, as it helps to focus light on the retina.

Topolyzer employs laser technology to measure corneal topography precisely. It is able to measure corneal curvature, thickness and symmetry. It is able to detect problems such as corneal degeneration, astigmatism and corneal edema. The collected data are used in the diagnosis and follow-up of these problems, and in the planning of surgeries such as the retractive.

What is it useful for?

This test helps to detect visual defects and corneal irregularities which are invisible to most conventional tests, including decentrations, keratoconus, astigmatism and inclination. It highlights aberrations and their influence by using a refractive map.

In which cases is it done?

This exam that evaluates the cornea is performed by the topographer. Normally ophthalmologists recommend it for:

It is usually recommended by ophthalmologists:

  • To assess if a patient with any refractive defect (myopia, far-sightedness or
astigmatism) is a candidate for surgical treatment.
  • To diagnose corneal diseases such as keratoconus, ectasias, cataracts, corneal ulcer and irregular astigmatism.
