What is Neuroophthalmology?

Neuro-ophthalmology is a medical subspecialty that combines neurology and ophthalmology to treat diseases affecting the central nervous system and its relationship to the eyes and visual system.

Neuro-ophthalmologists are trained to evaluate and treat a wide range of visual and neurological problems, including brain injury, eye movement disorders, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, and visual field disorders such as bitemporal hemianopsia.

Our eyes are connected to the brain by a network of neural connections, which allow us to process vision and perceive the world as we know it. While we need the components of the eye (cornea, lens, retina) to function properly and be in a healthy condition, without a proper connection between the brain and the eyes, the "vision" effect would not be possible.

The health of the optic nerve (responsible for this relationship) and the area of the cerebral cortex in charge of sight, are the main objective studied by Neuro-ophthalmology.
