Optometry

What is optometry?

Optometry is the discipline in charge of preventing, diagnosing, treating and correcting refractive and accommodative errors.

Commonly, it focuses on detecting fractive defects of both eyes through procedures such as schiascopy or retinoscopy and, also, through ocular refractive methods. In this way, numerous visual anomalies such as myopia, hypermetriopia, astigmatism, among others, are detected, compensated, and corrected.

It also deals with the design, calculation, adaptation and control of contact lenses and ophthalmic lenses.

At the Sandiego Ophthalmology Clinic, we have excellent Optometrists who can help you detect and correct this type of pathology in time.

What does the optometrist do?

An optometrist is a health professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of vision-related problems. Optometrists can perform a variety of tasks, including:

  • Eye exam: Optometrists perform exams to assess visual acuity, ability to focus, ability to perceive colors, and ability to adapt to light. They can also measure intraocular pressure to detect glaucoma.

  • Diagnosis of vision problems: Optometrists can detect problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, and amblyopia (lazy eye).

  • Corrective Lens Prescription: Optometrists may prescribe corrective lenses such as glasses or contact lenses to correct vision problems.

  • Treatment of eye diseases: Optometrists can treat eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and retinal diseases.

  • Eye Care Advice: Optometrists can advise their patients on how to care for their eyes, including tips on choosing sunglasses and preventing eye injuries.
