Refractive surgery

Refractive surgery is a set of surgical procedures which modify the refractive state of theeye, so that the use of glasses or contact lenses may be reduced or stopped.

Refractive defects include myopia, far-sightedness, astigmatism -either pure, or combined with myopia or far-sightedness-, and presbyopia. Not so long ago, such diseases could only be treated with either glasses or contact lenses.

Surgery is performed with an exclusive software incorporated into the laser equipment, which guarantees as much precision as possible in each patient’s visual correction. Such procedure is ambulatory, safe and reliable, and it is done under the stricter safety guidelines. It is intended to shape the cornea in agreement with each patient’s specific refractive problem, and give them back their sight in a few minutes.

The duration of such procedure is very short, and the incapacity that follows is minimum, which is why the patient is usually able to go back to his/her usual occupations the day after the surgery. Besides, anesthetic eyedrops are used, to maximize comfort.

Procedure: Refractive surgery is a very personalized procedure, which requires a very thorough previous study of the shape and functions of the ocular globe. Its purpose is to correct graduation, which should be assessed objectively and subjectively in basal conditions, and with pupils dilated.

The shape and thickness of cornea should be evaluated through different topography
studies, not only by assessing it as a whole, but also in details of its different layers. The
way the pupil dilates and contracts, depending on luminosity, is central, when it comes to guaranteeing visual quality in all kinds of conditions.

Retractive surgery could last for a whole lifetime, fifty years, twenty years… It all depends on many factors, including the patient’s age, his/her physical conditions, and how careful he/she is. Besides, as the patient grows old, sight may be affected.
