Intraocular lenses

Retractive surgery with intraocular lenses consists on the implantation of lenses to correct refractive defects (myopia, far-sightedness and astigmatism). It is indicated for those people who don’t want optical correction.

Cases for this surgery: Refractive surgery with phakic intraocular lenses is indicated for patients with a high degree of far-sightedness, when it comes to correcting high astigmatism, and when there is either a high degree of myopia or there is contraindication for laser application on either the superficial or the internal layers of the cornea (LASIK surgery), or for the implantation of intracorneal rings.

Usually, the pseudo-phakic intraocular lenses used in cataract surgeries are implanted in
patients with presbyopia or other refractive defects, generally patients above 45.

Procedure: The surgery is done with topical anesthesia, and takes between 15 and 20 minutes. It is ambulatory. There are no risks, besides those involved in any surgical act. After the surgery, periodical check-ups should be done every one year and a half, or two years, so that it can be assured that endothelial cell count (number of cells present in the corneal endothelium) does not change.

What kinds of patients need intraocular lenses?

Patients above 21, who suffer from stable myopia or far-sightedness, and who have a
range of diopters. The advantage of intraocular lenses is that sight quality improves a lot. In this procedure, a lens is added inside the ocular globe. No lens is removed, and no corneal tissue is smoothened.

How long do intraocular lenses last?

Such lenses have the authority to generate confidence in patients, as they have been in
the market for about 22 years, and the results are excellent: usually, the material lasts
forever.
