Practical guide to eye care on vacation

In the same way that you take care of your skin, hair and even your wardrobe, you must protect your eyes during the holiday season. We present a guide to the recommendations made by our visual health specialists.

All changes in the environment have their effect on the eyes. Even if you don't perceive it directly, the pupil, the conjunctiva or the lens, they do feel the effects. When you go on vacation, especially if it is in hot or cold weather, prevention and protection measures should be implemented for your visual health.

The sun, the wind, the breeze loaded with sand, the snow and everything that becomes an external agent -and extreme- for the eyes, is in turn an element of risk. We then present a guide to eye care on vacation, with the essentials during this season.

  1. Use a sun protection shield. Wear sunglasses all the time you are outdoors, even if the sky is cloudy. Lightning can affect the eyes, even if the direct reflection is not perceived. In addition, the water in swimming pools, the sea, snow or sand, increase the brightness and enhance the effect of UV rays. Optimize protection by wearing lenses with protection against UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged and frequent exposure to the harmful rays of the sun is directly related to diseases of the macula and cataracts.

  2. Blocks eyes from extreme environments. When, in addition to being outdoors, there are activities on bicycles, motorbikes or jetskis, the wind adds to the effect of the sun. In these cases, you should go for lenses that fit correctly to the shape of the face, that are not loose, that do not have cracks or cracks, and that completely block the eye area. Protective glasses that are not well fixed to the face have a counterproductive effect and increase the risks.

  3. Attention with contact lenses. Contact lenses can become contaminated with bacteria present in the water of a swimming pool, a lake or the sea and, in turn, cause eye infections. Ophthalmologists recommend not using them during water activities, instead there are prescription swimming goggles. If you must necessarily wear contact lenses underwater, make an appointment with one of the specialists at the Sandiego Ophthalmology Clinic, to analyze your case and recommend the most appropriate lenses for your case.
