Bad habits for vision

1. Forgetting to blink, in dry environments stopping blinking represents a great risk to visual health, especially in women over 55 years of age. Stopping blinking can contribute to generating dry eye, among other bad habits such as being in front of the computer or exposed to air conditioning. Blinking is a natural action that provides lubrication and cleaning of the ocular surface, and therefore should not be forgotten.

2. Stay away from cigarette smoke, excessive wind exposure, smoke, and chemical agents. Polluted environments can trigger red eye and extreme dryness in our ocular system.

Eye lubricants can help improve the symptoms of rejection of contamination, but the solution is the elimination of these contaminants; since the abusive use of medications can trigger other non-reversible eye pathologies.

Sunglasses with the appropriate protection filter provide significant protection not only from sun exposure, but also from external polluting agents, which combined with the wind can cause great discomfort to our eyes.

3. Make up the eyes with products that are not appropriate. For the most part, cosmetic products are tested and evaluated to comply with the safety of their recipients, but sometimes we expose ourselves to not-so-careful brands of products that subject our eyes and skin to extreme situations that lead to irritations and allergies. Another factor that makes makeup susceptible to contributing to the deterioration of our visual health is sharing makeup, by sharing it with other people or in the case of beauty salons, makeup becomes a vehicle for transmitting bacteria.

4. contact lenses should be a supplement, contact lenses should be taken as an aesthetic agent and not a medical solution; for this reason it is recommended to use them only a few days, or during part of the day. In the same way, its cleaning must be adequate and consistent with the recommendations of the ophthalmologist. Prolonged use of contact lenses can cause long-term eye injuries.

Special care is recommended when using cosmetic lenses. It is preferable to follow the ophthalmologist's recommendations for this class of lenses, even if it is an aesthetic issue since they could severely affect our visual health.

5. Do not use sun protection, good sunglasses will prevent total exposure of the ocular surface to sunlight, inclement weather, excessive flashes of light, cold and heat. They will also protect the external structure of the eye, the eyelids, which are made up of a very sensitive layer of skin to allow its mobility, but which is susceptible to damage with extreme changes in temperature.

6. Rubbing the eyes, in children it is common to have this bad practice, generating refractive alterations that trigger the most common eye pathologies such as: myopia, farsightedness, astigmatism and even keratoconus. This bad practice, although it is more frequent in children, also occurs in adults, generating the same inconveniences. Rubbing the eyes is an action that must be evidenced in the patient and corrected to save visual health.

These bad habits are easily evident in the consultation, which is why we recommend visiting the ophthalmologist once a year.
